Lighting is a critical part of any music event or concert. The right lighting can greatly enhance the audience's experience and highlight the musicians' performances. When planning lighting for a music event, there are several key factors to consider:
Types of Lighting
There are various types of lighting that serve different purposes in a music event:
- Stage Lighting: Usually directional lights like spotlights, flood lights, LED panels etc. aimed at the stage and performers. These are used to illuminate the musicians and provide visual interest.
- Effect Lighting: Lighting used to create a mood or atmosphere through colored lights, strobes, lasers, fog/haze machines etc. These enhance the visual spectacle.
Audience Lighting: Usually general lighting that illuminates the audience area so people can see while moving around safely.
Positioning
Proper positioning of lighting instruments is crucial. Stage lights should be angled to fully cover the stage and follow the movement of performers. Effect lights need to be strategically placed for maximum visual impact.
Programming & Control
Modern lighting utilizes DMX controlled intelligent fixtures that can be programmed for dynamic light shows. Computerized light boards allow complex lighting cues to be executed for each song. Things like blackouts, strobes and effects need to be precisely timed with the music.
Power & Electricity Requirements
The lighting rigs require ample power supplied to multiple locations around the venue. Working closely with electricians to map electricity needs prevents problems. Backup power sources may be needed for redundancy.
Lighting Crew
A qualified crew should handle set up, operation and strike of lighting equipment. They play a big role in the show's success and safety of attendees/performers.
By factoring in these technical, creative and logistical considerations early when planning the event, it allows designing a lighting scheme that really amplifies the musical experience for all.
